The NEW What’s Next

Life has no map. No encyclopedia, dictionary, or even an index.
Here we are, out here making this up as we go along.
Like we know what we’re doing.

We do what everyone else is doing.
The way it’s always been done.
Following people like they know more than us.
Like they know what they’re doing.

That’s cool if you’ve got rich, happy, successful people to model.
But how many rich, happy, successful people do you know?
We’re doing it wrong.

I don’t mind being cliché: our model for life is literally the definition of insanity.

Remember when you were little and you could be anything, then somebody showed you how?
Just kidding. That never happened.
Nope.
We got a story: “Be good, get good grades, get into a good school, so you can get a good job.”
But the only “good” from that is getting good and deep in debt.

We heard that “story” enough it became our model for life.
We’ve always thought that once we got the basics: the job the house, the car, the spouse, the kids, the dog, the picket fence…
THEN.
FINALLY!
THENNNNNNN we’d be happy.

But we’re not.
So what’s next?

We’re not rich.
We’re not happy.
But we keep doing the same things we’ve always done.
I’m mean, why why why why why would we keep doing what people told us was supposed to make us rich and happy?

Because we can’t see the alternative.

But I do.
And I couldn’t understand why it seemed like no one else could see it too.

Then I went on my personal journey.
And I found the more you understand, the more life expands.
I could “see” what’s next because I don’t live my life according to “how it is.”

“I dwell in possibility.
And believe life can take me anywhere.
I dream in color.
Not because it makes the pictures pretty…
but because I know life isn’t lived in only black and white.”

We’re so drawn into the story we can’t read between the lines.
Caught up in a narrative that says happiness is at the end of the book.
But I used to work at a library.
And I’ve read that story.
The hero on that journey, is you.

With every step, you learn more and more about YOU.
Because that’s how you discover why you’re here.
Who you came here to be.
And what you are to do.
Because that’s what “pursuit of happiness” really means.

And the pursuit of happiness is the NEW what’s next.
